My First Phils

I received some silver Philharmonics from AMPEX today. Meh, they really don't hold a candle to a Maple Leaf, or even an SAE, as far as eye appeal.

I was a bit let down, myself. I was intrigued by the photos on Monex a few weeks back. They do have a nice thick edge. The Monex pictures make the coins appear to have far more relief than in actuality. I expected the violins to actually stand off the coin with a curved surface. I also nabbed a 1/10 gold philharmonic and was pleasantly surprised to see that the edge is micro-reeded with an alternating band pattern. Very pretty. I think grabbing 2008 Philharmonics now will pay off later as the coins catch on over the next few years. The current premium doesn't compare to Koalas, Kooks or Lunars.

Was yours in something akin to a very thick and somewhat milky shrink wrap job?

TomD:

The silver version has an entirely different edge than the gold version.

Tom's photos look better than what I see, looking at the real deal! Perhaps it is the appearance through the plastic wrap?

Not to derail the thread but I have always wondered if it is worth keeping coins in mint packaging. I have maples in a sheet and would love to store them some other way but feel the packaging is a helpful selling point (iow, I see value in the packaging).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I've broken out all my ML's and put them in tubes. Much more compact and after all, it is a bullion coin, right?

I have often cut open maples out of their envelopes to put into tubes and bags that are more compact. My local guy also sometimes has SAE's in those paper envelopes with plastic windows, I tear those shits out ASAP and drop 'em into tubes... vanity never takes preference with my bullion...

My local dealer doesn't bother with things like Phils or Kookaburras so I've been waiting for Apmex to get more in stock. Just 1 day after my purchase from Apmex, yep, they have the Philharmonics! :banghead:

I have some gold buffalos that I removed from the shrink wrap type packaging and placed in airtites. They're just to soft to keep in the mint packaging.

Agreed!!

I adore the Maple Leaf side of the coin...and despise the "rear end" side (I know the Canucks probably say Her Royal Lowness is the "obverse").

Silver Phils are beautiful pieces.
